My Background

I'm Stan Sutterfield, a retired USAF pilot who last flew the F-16C at MacDill AFB, FL.

To the right is a Frank Duarte photo of my jet at an airshow in England.  Look carefully and you can see my "Gunman" nose art on the jet.  Thanks to "Tags" Aguera for this photo.

The Overall Plan - I'm custom building this RV-8A as a fun sport plane with IFR capability.  The instrument panel will be all glass (Blue Mountain EFIS) and it will incorporate a two axis autopilot capable of flying a coupled ILS if needed..  The engine will be an IO-390 with E/P Mag ignition and turning a MT 3 blade propeller.  It will have a two battery, one alternator electrical system.  I'm going to use HID lights for the landing lights and halogen bulbs for the recognition lights.  I'll use the Whelen comet flash strobes and hold out for someone to devise high quality LED positions lights.  Whelen currently has excellent LED position lights, but they're 24 volt.  I am considering going to 24 volts - not just for the position lights, but because there are other advantages to 24 volts.  (Update-Nope scratch that idea.)  This plane will be handed down to my children for their flying pleasure so I'm focused on not taking shortcuts.

Timeline - My current plan is to fly by the end of February, 2006.  Ha!  Okay, the new timeline is to fly before I retire.
